Overview

Jarrod Clements has been known as "Chunky" since birth, though at 6-foot-2, 290 pounds he's by no means a large defensive tackle at the college level. He is active, though, making 11.5 tackles for loss (out of 35 total) in 2015 and seven (36) in 2016. Clements played sparingly as a freshman (four tackles, one for loss) before earning three starting assignments as an injury replacement in 2014 (24 tackles, six for loss, two sacks).

Analysis

Strengths

Strikes with power in his initial charge. Times snap and shoots into neutral zone with some quickness. Active and aggressive with hands and club moves. Finds his way into the gaps. Not a content pass rusher. Works to improve positioning and tries to find blocker's edge. Ties a basketball Euro-step with arm-over move to climb over top of guard. Active tackler for interior player. Forced three fumbles over final two seasons at Illinois.

Weaknesses

Short-stepper. Not fluid when moving laterally. Complete waste of time gaming him up front with twists. Counter moves in short supply. Once he gets behind in the rep, he rarely fights back into the play. Plays upright. Pad level gets him redirected out of gap and past tackle opportunities. Lacks the leverage and anchor to handle double-teams.

Bottom Line

Penetrating three-technique tackle on the next level with some moldable pass-rush traits. Clements will always struggle to withstand NFL power at the point of attack unless he improves his pad level and overall anchor, but he might be able to flash enough to find a spot on a practice squad.
