Overview

A veteran of 22 career starts despite leaving after his junior season, Rachal's rare size, explosive hands and nastiness as a drive blocker make him an intriguing prospect for a power running offense. Rachal lacks prototype quickness and struggles with balance at times as a pass blocker. Despite being voted by conference coaches first team All-Pac-10 in 2007, Rachal could have used another year of development before turning pro, especially considering questions about his durability. In leaving early, Rachal is hoping the financial gain of an NFL contract can help ease the burden of family medical issues.

Analysis

Strengths

Positives: Prototype size for the position. ... Well-built athlete with well proportioned frame. ... Good explosive use of his hands to pop the defender and generate a surge as a drive blocker. ... Plays with good leverage. ... Has the leg drive and flashes the nastiness to drive defenders yards off the ball. ... Despite only marginal quickness, can stalk and hit the moving target at the second level. Negatives: Marginal overall quickness. ... Late off the snap and has only marginal lateral quickness to pull or to get to the second level. ... Due to lack to prototype quickness, will resort to cut blocks, and when he does so he is only marginally effective. ... A bit of a waist-bender who leans into the defensive tackle in pass protection, limiting his balance. ... Missed three games in 2007 with sprained right knee, continuing a trend. ... He missed action in 2004, 2005 and 2007 due to injury (seven games total).
