Overview

A versatile guard prospect, Parker split time at left and right guard since his sophomore season. He started six games at left guard and six at right guard in 2008. He was a second-team All-SEC right guard in 2006 and a first-team choice on the left side in 2007. Parker once again earned second-team all-conference honors as a senior, though his overall play was disappointing. A bit out of shape after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, Parker didn't take the next step toward progressing into a first-day pick as expected, and may have regressed. Had an arm span of 34 1/8 inches and a hand span of 10 inches at the combine.

Analysis

Strengths

Positives: Plays with a wide base. ... Good drive blocker, as he stays low and comes out of his stance with power. ... Tough for defenders to shed in the run game. ... Can drive a linebacker 10 or more yards downfield. ... Gets below the pads of his opponent in goal-line and short-yardage situations. ... Able to cut his man after sustaining the block downfield a few yards. ... Sets up and anchors well in pass protection, keeping his hands active and he does not give a lot of ground. ... Good awareness and even adjusts to blitzers coming from the opposite side of the line if necessary. ... Experienced at both guard positions. Negatives: Short and carries too much of his weight around the midsection. ... Leans forward a bit when blocking on the move, and will lose balance against stronger tackles. ... Has experience on the weak side, but may need to switch to the strong side in the NFL. ... Does not move quickly enough to be effective on pulls, but should be adequate trapping. ... Adequate getting to the beginning of the second level, but could struggle to get to quicker NFL linebackers. ... Combine check required due to history of knee injuries.
