Overview

Led Cal with 93 tackles in 2008 in his first season at inside linebacker and earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 from the league coaches. Felder's career started off impressively, as he started eight games as a true freshman, earning freshman All-American recognition from some publications. Injuries robbed him of his sophomore season, and though Felder rebounded with a strong junior campaign (career-high 101 tackles) at weak-side linebacker, he again struggled with injuries. Felder's propensity to get nicked up will be a concern for scouts, who otherwise see a versatile linebacker capable of helping immediately on special teams and worthy of development.

Analysis

Strengths

Positives: Stout in-the-box run defender. ... Good frame with room for additional growth. ... Good instincts for the position. ... Locates the ball quickly and no waste of motion to get into position to make a play on the ball. ... Good initial pop to meet, greet and discard the oncoming blocker. ... Experienced blitzer. ... Can close when opportunities present themselves. ... Good straight-line speed. ... Cognizant defender in coverage who reads the quarterback's eyes. ... Tough. ... Has battled through nagging injuries throughout his career. Negatives: Lacks the speed to play sideline to sideline. ... Can be beaten to the flanks. ... A bit stiff in the hips. Struggles a bit in breaking down in space and can be juked by quicker ballcarriers. ... Slow to redirect as a pass rusher. ... Good weight-room strength, but this strength doesn't always translate onto the field. ... Likes to lower his shoulder into blocks and into the ballcarrier, rather than using his hands. ... Has a tendency to get nicked up and isn't the same player when playing hurt.
