Overview

Means is a two-sport athlete who entered the NFL Draft following his junior year at Indiana after already beginning his pro baseball career last summer as an 11th-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds. Means hit .231 with three home runs and 16 RBIs for Billings last summer before making 34 receptions for 450 yards and one touchdown for the Hoosiers in 2008. He had 48 catches for 559 yards as a junior.

NFL teams might not take a chance drafting a player who wants to play both sports professionally, but as a free agent he could make enough noise to secure a roster spot. Had an arm span of 31 1/2 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

Analysis

Strengths

Positives: Adequate height with solid upper and lower body builds. Generally reliable hands; able to make the tough catch in traffic. Uses his body to shield defenders on inside routes. Quick feet to get into and out of his route after pushing his man upfield. Has some suddenness off the line of scrimmage to beat the press. Can spin in either direction after the catch to get additional yardage. Effective downfield blocker on screens and running plays because of his strength. Negatives: Better athlete than football player. May be limited to a possession receiver and special teams player at the next level. Slow to get off the line. Lacks the speed to separate from corners downfield. Does not fight to get open when his quarterback scrambles. Splitting his focus on two sports makes scouts wonder if his heart is truly in either.
