Overview

Hester, who is related to Chicago Bears receiver Devin Hester, starred in both track and football at Dominguez High School, which is located in Compton, Calif. Hester was a three-time all-state track performer, and anchored the 4x400 meter relay team to a win with the fastest time (3:09.59) by a California school since 1997 and the fastest ever by a school in the Compton and Long Beach areas. As a football player, Hester was a four star recruit who in his senior season was a team captain and made 86 tackles, 14 pass deflections, and five interceptions as a corner, in addition to the 20 catches for 625 yards and six touchdowns he contributed at wide out.

Hester did not play in his first year on campus (2008), and the following year, he only played in two contests as he was limited by an injury. In 2010, Hester appeared in all 12 games and made 11 starts. He registered 26 tackles, with three interceptions and four passes defended. Hester played in all 14 games the next season and logged 12 starts. He recorded 57 tackles, one interception, and had seven pass breakups. In 2012, as a fifth year senior, Hester started all 14 games. He had 44 tackles, one interception, and seven passes defended on the season.

Analysis

Strengths

Great frame for the position. Has long arms and strength. Good athlete. Appears to run well, and changes directions smoothly. Fluid in his hips. Also showcases enough lateral agility to stick with receivers. Feels the receiver's route develop. Aggressive run defender, attacks downhill and wraps up.

Weaknesses

Doesn't have great ball skills. Will struggle to get his head turned. Lacks great acceleration moving forward, doesn't stop his feet and drive on the football as well as you'd like. A bit unrefined from a technique standpoint. Gets latched on to receiver blocks. Shows some difficulties in zone coverage.

Bottom Line

Hester has a great frame and is more fluid than most would think. He's a good all-around athlete and works well in man coverage. He needs to do a better job of finding and making plays on the football, but he should still be selected in the middle rounds.
