Analysis

Strengths

Gives strong effort chasing to sideline. Breaks down in space and is reliable form tackler. Patient against run. Adequate with hands to discard. Doesn't charge downhill without a play and won't often run himself out of his run fit. Reads play-action well. Will turn and run, finding consistent depth in Tampa 2. Shows route awareness in zone coverage. Shows consistent effort and competitiveness. Likely to fight back and win a rep after getting dominated the rep before.

Weaknesses

Small for an inside linebacker. Lacks bulk and has extremely short arms. Gets engulfed and smothered by wide-bodies. Must improve on reacting to second-level blocks before they get into him. Marginal play strength -- sits and waits for running back to get to him and absorbs blows, allowing runner to land first punch. Nothing special athletically. Limited range to make plays. Liability in man coverage against running backs.

Sources Tell Us

"If he had more athleticism you would like to stick him at WILL backer, but I see him as a MIKE only and depth player with enough talent to step in and fill for an injured starter." -- Big Ten scouting consultant

Bottom Line

Hull is a productive linebacker who might be forced to stay inside due to his lack of athleticism. His size and short arms concern some scouts because they fear he'll get overwhelmed on second level and give up too many big runs. Hull has enough talent to make it in the league as a backup linebacker/special-teams contributor.
